Frequently Asked Questions

What skill level do I need for your workshops?+
All levels are welcome. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, our guides tailor instruction to your experience. We keep groups small so everyone gets personal attention.
What camera gear should I bring?+
Camera Bodies
• Primary System: Weather-sealed Mirrorless or DSLR (high humidity environment)
• Performance: Priority on High ISO capability (expect ISO 6400+ under the canopy)
• Backup: A second body is highly recommended to avoid trip-ending gear failures
• Requirement: Ensure you are fully familiar with exposure, AF modes, and ISO controls before arrival

Lenses
• Long Glass (Wildlife): 500mm to 600mm effective focal length (Full Frame)
  ◦ Options: 180-600mm, 200-600mm, or 600mm primes
• Speed: f/4 is ideal; f/5.6–6.3 is functional. Avoid f/8 setups due to low light
• Macro: Dedicated macro lens (105mm to 180mm) for frogs and reptiles
• General/Scenics: 24-70mm for lodge life and landscapes

Support & Stability
• Monopod: Most versatile for shooting into the canopy; highly recommended
• Tripod: Necessary for macro work or if using heavy 600mm f/4 primes
• Heads: Gimbal head for long glass; Ball head for general/macro

Power & Storage
• Memory: Minimum 128GB+ cards; expect to shoot 1,000+ images per day
• Backup: Laptop + two external hard drives (redundancy is key)
• Batteries: At least two high-capacity batteries + two chargers
• Power: US-style plugs; no adapters needed for North American travelers

Field Accessories
• Protection: High-quality rain cover (e.g., LensCoat) and microfiber cloths
• Lighting: Small headlamp or flashlight for night walks
• Comfort: Knee pads (for low-angle macro) and a lightweight secondary backpack for day hikes
• Personal: Tropical-strength insect repellent and high-SPF sunscreen

Pre-Trip Checklist
• Test Everything: Do not bring "out of the box" gear
• AF Fine-Tuning: Calibrate lenses at home; the field is not the place for technical troubleshooting
How do I get to the Osa Peninsula?+

The Journey at a Glance:
• Touchdown in San Jose: Your international flight will arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO)
• The San Jose Stopover: Depending on your arrival time, most guests enjoy a relaxing overnight stay in the city to recharge
• The Scenic Leap: From San Jose, you'll take a short, breathtaking domestic flight directly to Puerto Jimenez—the gateway to the Osa
• Full Concierge Support: Don't worry about the logistics. Our team handles the heavy lifting, from coordinating your San Jose hotel stay to booking your domestic flight down to the peninsula

From the moment you land in Costa Rica, we're with you every step of the way.
